In the wave-strike over unquiet stones, Tonico Lemos Auad

coccoliths and coccospheres

compressed beyond endurance

raised up those tall white ramparts

cliff ends of verdant folded downland

home to wild thyme and wort cream

cowslips and the Chalkhill Blue

Yet you, oh Man, what legacy is yours?

your tin cans and your plastic bags

your detritus in the landfill

your motor car soon crushed to

be replaced by this year’s model

your many things your time your life

compressed beyond endurance

your collagen your skeleton

apatite and other salts of calcium

and phosphate buried six feet down

will never match the beauty of those

coccoliths and coccospheres

compressed beyond endurance

Reflections on Tonico Lemos Auad at the De La Warr Pavillion February 2016
